JaymieSo if you're wanting to learn more about Texas Longhorn Cattle Markets or you're a registered Texas Longhorn breeder looking to expand your herd, you'll want to tune in to today's episode.
SPEAKER_00I'm Jamie. And I'm Molly. We're the owners of Hired Hand Software and Hired Hand Live, and we're excited to bring you a closer look at this upcoming sale. In today's episode, we'll be talking with the sale host about consignments, sale details, and what to watch for in the ring. You can view consignments at hiredhandlive.com and in most cases, visit the consigners' hired hand powered websites to learn more. Now let's jump into this weekend's sale preview.
JaymieI'm here with Sean and Alison Sayer, the host of the upcoming B and C sale, which is held in New Cambria, Missouri. We'll be taking a look at the sale details, sponsors, consigners, and of course the consignments. As we talk about the consignments, you can follow along on hiredhandlive.com. And if you want to dig deeper, take a look at the consigners' hired hand websites. Let's get into it. How are the both of you today? Good. Great. Allison's making her podcast debut today. How exciting.
SPEAKER_01I am a little nervous.
JaymieYou'll do great. You'll do great. So another year of the uh spring sale. Are you ready for it?
SPEAKER_03Better be. Yeah, we're ready.
JaymieI feel like at this point in time, it's just uh you've done it for so many years that you're, I mean, you kind of almost maybe do it in your sleep a little bit.
SPEAKER_03It's getting pretty pretty easy. Allison makes it easy, so that helps a lot.
JaymieWow, we should write that down, huh? We got it on record.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
JaymieWell, I enjoy enjoy looking at the um the consigners and the buyers and the pictures from your sale because it seems that there are many people that choose to only go to your sale each year. Um, what do you think it is about your sale that keeps people coming back each year or choosing to only participate um in your sale for the for the year? Like that's the one sale that they go to.
SPEAKER_03A lot of it's just family tradition. You know, we've been doing it, what, 48 years? You know, honesty. You know, we just we're just down on family people. You know, people trust us, they've been coming here for 48 years. Um, so that's pretty much it. You know, we just run a regular old sale. You know, we're not fancy or anything. We just do what we do.
JaymieAre there any trends that you've noticed over the years or maybe just in the last few years uh at the at your BNC sale?
SPEAKER_03Probably the steady prices. I mean, they're every long horn sale is getting a little little little better on prices, but I mean, just the steady prices. You know, we've we've had some lows, we've had some highs, but I'd just say the steady prices overall. And the quality of cattle, of course. You know, we've had a great, great run of quality cattle.
JaymieAre there, when you talk about the cattle, are there specific um certain types of animal that sell better, whether it's heifers, cow calf pears, embryo?
SPEAKER_03Our heifers, our heifers have been selling really good uh overall. We've had some some high-dollar cows here lately, but overall our heifers have been topping the sale.
JaymieFor those who have not been to your sale before, whether it's the spring sale or the fall sale, what are some things that they should know that they can't find in the catalog?
SPEAKER_03It's pretty it's pretty basic. I mean, health papers are the biggest issue. I mean, when they come to our sale, every animal has to have a tag in its ear with the health papers. That's the biggest, the biggest qual we have with our vets. Um, we try to to let people know that coming in coming into the sale. Uh, all the restaurant people know that. Uh, a lot of commercial people do not. Um that we do we do that to let people know it's a must. We are we are a TB free state in Missouri. Some states aren't, Nebraska's not. Um, but if they have that health paper in hand with a matching ID tag, it helps them a lot. And that's our biggest, biggest qual is is is that. Uh, but everything else is pre-cut dry. We feed, we water, we take care of all that. Um the clients, if they want to feed water their cattle, they can, but we take care of all that.
JaymieAnd when they get there with those health health papers, is there um somebody in particular that they should hand them to? Or where should they take them?
SPEAKER_03Allison.
SPEAKER_01Yep. I can collect all those and the papers that haven't been turned in and make sure they get because we do have a bet that comes on site um to double check everything and make sure the papers go to the right person when being bought.
JaymieAllison, I'm assuming that there's an office or something that you'll be in since you'll be dealing with so much paperwork.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um, right where the trailer comes down to unload, we take our um option trailer down there and I set up in there and it's pretty much right by where they unload. So they can just hand everything right to me there.
JaymieNice.
SPEAKER_01Well should we get into all right?
JaymieWell should we get into the schedule of events for the weekend? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, we start out uh course unloading. Uh we like we it's it's a must to have everything there by five on Friday, uh, so the judges can get everything um judged and prepared for the uh Calcutta, uh, which starts at um the gathering starts at six o'clock at the Helm Street in Brookfield. So, and then the Calcutta starts at seven. Uh so the cow the the gathering we will have, they will have uh food and beverages at the Calcutta. Um and then the Calcutta starts at seven seven o'clock. Um the bar sponsor this year is Clint Sherald uh tollas for Square One Longhorns. Uh the awards and stuff will be announced and and given out then um at the Calcutta. So it's just a fun evening. Uh we we have uh music and just a good time to get together and just talk about uh whatever they want to talk about.
JaymieHow many entries do you have in your faturity this year?
SPEAKER_03Forty-two. That's heifers and young bulls.
JaymieSo will you have two classes this year?
SPEAKER_03We have five.
JaymieFive. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Four for heifers and one for junior bull.
JaymieOkay. Um and who did you select for the judge?
SPEAKER_01It's Clark and Carmen Velena out of Nebraska. And they actually had one of the higher selling cows at the last sale. Yeah.
JaymieVery nice. Do they know what they're getting themselves into? Is this their first faturity that they've ever judged?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I they've been in the business long enough. I think they've done a few. They they they um they help put on the Nebraska.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they have to be able to do that.
SPEAKER_03They help on the Nebraska Faturity. So they're they're not new at the at what they're doing, so they they kind of know the animals.
JaymieSo And unlike other faturities and sales, um, your the animals that are entered into in the faturity sell during your sale. They're the very first ones that sell.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yes. So if anyone's we don't have the room for a full-fledged for faturity. Um our barn is is is a is a regular stockyard barn. Uh, we don't have the the facilities to do a faturity. Um, we just mainly concentrate on on the sale, and then we have the faturity. You know, back in the 80s, dad gave out six thousand dollars added money um, you know, when these faturities started. So it's just kept going that way. And then we sell the animals that that morning, starting off with the futurities, class one through class five, and then we get right into the uh registered cows, and then we get into the commercials and the ropers and things like that. So, you know, they um they bring their animals, and that and that's one of the reasons our heifers sell so good, is for that fact because a lot of the the consigners bring their better heifers, uh, you know, to show off what they they've um they've bred, what they've started in their foundation herd. So it kind of puts them out there and shows them what they what they have. So it makes a big difference.
JaymieDefinitely. And for anyone looking in the sale catalog, if they're wondering what that F is in front of the lot number at the very beginning, it that means that they're a faturity animal.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
JaymieOkay, so that wraps up Friday. Let's talk about Saturday. What happens right away in the morning?
SPEAKER_03Well, we have a meet and greet um at the sale barn. Um, a lot of people come there, they eat breakfast and just kind of socialize in the morning um and kind of get uh we have a few new consigners and people coming in and just talking and visiting, you know, about what lots they like, what they see, what they don't see, you know, so they just gather and visit a little bit.
JaymieAnd then so that's at 8:30. The cow sale starts at 10 a.m. Um central time. Who should they contact if somebody has a question on sale day?
SPEAKER_03The barn or Allison or I.
JaymieIs the um phone number for the barn in the catalog?
SPEAKER_03Yes, it is. Uh-huh.
JaymieAnd what about the back crew? Who's gonna be the cattle handler for the weekend?
SPEAKER_03Uh Bernie Hicks and his crew take care of the back.
JaymieAnd haulers? Do you have any haulers lined up?
SPEAKER_03Yes, we do. We have um, well, the new one, Eddie Driscoll. He's uh he'll be up all Cody James is gonna be here. We got Bart Meiger, Joe Walker. We'll have haulers. Uh so if anybody wants to wants haulers, we have people coming from Texas that can haul back, and so we'll have haulers. We'll make sure the cattle get to where they need to be. And if they can't get them there, they can bring them to our house and we'll take care of them until they get haulers.
JaymieAnd for those people who will be tuning in online, we'll be sure to text out uh the haulers' names and their contact information so they can make arrangements that way too.
SPEAKER_03We'll have numbers, numbers for all those haulers, yes.
JaymieAnd who is gonna you're gonna be the auctioneer, of course, and who's the pedigree reader that for this year?
SPEAKER_03Justin Georges.
JaymieHe's been the pedigree reader for quite a few years now.
SPEAKER_01Probably for the last five years, really.
SPEAKER_03Ever since dad retired.
JaymieYeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
JaymieAnd what about sponsors? Who are your sponsors?
SPEAKER_03We've got uh 39 can or no, we got uh J Bar J Longhorns, Crossfire Longhorns, DG Longhorn Ranch, uh Lisa Lubring is uh hired hand sponsor, Commitment Ranch, Montgomery Briggs Ranch, High View Hill Longhorns, and Landis Farms. Also, the um Square One Longhorns will be the Friday night bar sponsor.
JaymieIt seems like you have a couple regulars there on that list. I think last year, your the last sale, you probably mentioned Lisa as well, and I'm in Landy's maybe too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. They've been with us for several years. And something else I'd like to mention. We start the sale at 10 a.m. with a um uh a wounded warrior guided service uh donation lot uh that uh Jerry and Julie Brandt uh donate uh uh an animal every year, and it goes to the uh it's a wounded warrior guided service. Uh so that's it's a service that is done here in in the states. The money stays here in the states. Matter of fact, we're going down to uh receive an award April 19th or no 21st. Uh we've raised over$30,000 for this foundation. Uh, so they're gonna give us an award at their uh local event this year in April. So something we we appreciate the brands for and all the longhorn breeders that have donated and helped us with. Um, we that's that's how we start our sale every year. So we appreciate that.
JaymieThat's great that you all do that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
JaymieSo consigners. Earlier, I think I heard you mention that there are some new consigners this year.
SPEAKER_03Yes, we have four new consigners. Um Circle A, Brian, and Karen Allen are coming this year from uh blanket, Texas. Uh Why Not Cattle Company are coming, it's coming from Hurtland, Missouri. Uh Outfitting LLC uh is coming from High Desert Ranch from uh Craig, Colorado. And uh Kyra Hills coming from Tennessee. So those are the four uh four new consigners that we got. And we have 39 consigners this year.
SPEAKER_01Four new consigners from 40 now with uh uh Joseph Lawley. That's 39. Oh, that's 39. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So and we have 119 not 119 lots.
JaymieBig sale. And that's pretty awesome that you have uh for the four new consigners are from all over the U.S. as well. That's yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03Uh Texas, Colorado, Tennessee, and and just up the road in Missouri, believe it or not. Yep.
JaymieAre there any um subs or scratches before we go?
SPEAKER_03Lot 81. Lot 81 is out.
JaymieLot 81 is out. We'll get that updated online if we don't already have it.
SPEAKER_01There's there's two that are out, and I think they're both updated online. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_03And then we have the three sublots that we've just added online that you've you've already got online as well.
SPEAKER_01Well, are we ready for a round of catalog roulette?
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. Let's get it.
JaymieAll right, Alison, we'll take it easy on you this first round. Thank you. Okay, let's start with we'll go with uh lot F2, TCC Tootsie Pop from Tall Grass Cattle.
SPEAKER_03You know, it it's the meredists have taken a lot of time and effort to to buy and and raise uh wonderful animals. And Joe has um has helped Judy out tremendously since Bill's passing. And he's consigned, he's consigned to several sales, and he he he supports our cells well, and he's put in a couple really nice heifers. And this TCC uh Tootsie Pop is well, she's just a she's just a heck of a heifer. She's she's not she's not been exposed. She's a 24 model, and she's gonna fit in anybody's herd. I mean, she's got the horn, the color, and she's just an amazing animal.
JaymieCorrect me if I'm wrong here, but when you lot your sale, you tend to put all of the consignment, all the um every ranch's consignments all together. Is that right?
SPEAKER_03Or am I we try to, and then if we get like um Bill or uh Tom Smith and Dick Lowe, they have 11 and 15. We'll put four in, skip four, put four in, skip four. But yeah, we we try to put them all together, yes. Yes, makes it easier for our our our uh guys in the back.
JaymieDefinitely. Okay, we'll move on now to lot F8. JSK Black Snow from Kettleson Longhorns.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, another, you know, the the pedigree sets itself on this heifer. They've got uh F7 and F8, and they're bred, they're bred just about a light. Uh that MC hanging tough, everybody knows that is a wonderful bull. This F8 is exposed to that JSK turbo bull. You know, you you've got drag iron on the bottom, and you've got MC hanging tough on the top. She's just a beautiful black and white heifer that's probably gonna stay in Missouri.
JaymieAdd to the rest of your black and white herd.
SPEAKER_03She's pop well, yes, yes. A really nice heifer, put real well put together heifer. She's also got cowboy subjects in her, so that's gonna help a lot.
JaymieRR cinnamon roll from uh Robeson Ranch is the next one lot, F-13.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, F13's a is a great heifer. I mean, the Robesons, you know, they come in here from Texas, and uh, like I said, they topped the sale a couple years ago. Some cows they brought in here. You know, you got 50-50 uh BCB, which is a 90 plus inch bull on the top side, and and the heifer is just a fabulous colored horn set. Uh, she's gonna make a great replacement heifer in anybody's herd. So just a beautiful heifer.
JaymieNext, we'll move on to one from Mr. Dick Lowe, F19 RRR, Miss Tommy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know, Dick has put a lot of cattle on the ground. It's it's they're amazing. He's done a great job. If you look at a lot of the pedigrees in the industry, you're gonna see that triple R brand or that triple R pedigree in your in your herd. Um, it's a shame that his pictures don't show what what they're gonna look like uh because he you know he's up north. But here's a cowboy tough chatch heifer, you know, out of that Tommy gun on the bottom side, you know, which has done great for him in the past. I mean, I think she's a great heifer.
JaymieF-24 will be the next one from Crossfire Longhorns with Scott Kelly and Hannah Farber. Uh their lot, again, F-24, Ava's got a gun.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they've done great things with TCC 50 bullets. You know, they've promoted him, they've done a lot of a lot of promoting with that bull, and they've done a lot with him. You know, you got that done done got double on the bottom, which is uh is has and was great, a great bull uh with Orn O'Dell. You know, he he done that uh breeding with that bull, but it they're just just a great, great animal, come from great, great um people that put their herd together. They bred they bred the way they wanted to breed, and they put together a great great program, you know. Um he's 90 inches. Um, so I mean it just a great program.
JaymieWe'll go back to Dick Lowe for this next one. F-28, R R R Miss Pretty.
SPEAKER_03Cowboy Chuff checks, what can you say? Um then you got that uh Miss J Bird on the bottom 813, a great producer on the bottom side. You'll see her pedigrees in a lot of a lot of good cows, a lot of good heifers, you know, and he doesn't breed until they're two. So uh there again, she's she's got tricolor, she's got a great horn, she's a younger heifer. Uh, she's gonna be tough to beat in in that class. So she'll be another great replacement heifer.
JaymieSo next up is F-32, JD Meadow from uh Shady Creek Longhorns.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I she's just a nice young little heifer, uh Blue Rone heifer. She's she's got the Delvic breeding in her, uh, which is a great, great, um, great breeder in in the longhorn industry. Um her sire is a grulo bull, so she's gonna have great color. She'll be a great replacement heifer. She's just a young thing. So she was she's a complete package. She's a really nice heifer.
JaymieThe next one we'll go back to Farber's with Crossfire Longhorns and talk about their lot, F40, Henry 44.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I just this this lot here just goes to show you what that TCC 50 bullets will do um and it's and it's prodigy. Uh here's a here's a young young prospect out of out of that uh that bull. And then you've got uh cowboy Casanova on the bottom side. So I mean you're just looking at 90 inches on 90 inches. So I you're just gonna have a tremendous animal here. Um he's he's just a good-looking bull, straight out horns, great color, great disposition. You know, the harbor, the the farmers have put together a great program and it shows on in this young bull here.
JaymieWe'll go to Mr. Tom Smith, who has been consigning at your sale for so many years.
SPEAKER_03It feels like maybe Tom's been don't Tom's been here, man, I don't know, 25, 30 years. You know, he's uh well back back when Jamaicaism was just just getting started with um with him breeding with Jamaicism. And you see, you know what Jamaicism's doing now. Jamaicism is probably one of the the most well-known bulls in the breed as far as prodigy and what's on the ground today. Um, and it just it just shows that what he has and what he's done in industry. He's probably one of the, in my opinion, I'm not saying he's the best. I'm not saying anybody's the best, but he's one of the top breeders in the industry, you know.
JaymieWell, let's talk about his lot, F-42, um, WS Granite.
SPEAKER_03Earthquake is that earthquake bull has put a lot of great, great animals on the ground. You know, you're looking at a bull that's 82 inches tip to tip at 32 months old. And then you got cowboy up checks on the bottom side. I don't know. I don't know what you can say. There's nothing wrong with this bull. He just Tom's just got too many, and he he's got to get rid of some, and he's he's he's used this bull, and that's the only reason he's selling him. And he hates to sell him, but that's just where he's at. You know.
JaymieWell, that was the last bit. Futurity animals. So now we'll move on. So I guess these next animals will not be in the Faturity. We'll start with Lap 47, TXN Isabella special from BC Longhorns.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Bruce and Carol, they've been consigning quite a while too. They're right up there with Tom as far as coming to the sale. And they they bring good cattle uh every year. Here's a nice big uh twisty horn cow. She's an 18 model. Um she's she's a got WS cow. There again, you got the WS breeding in the bottom. Um she's a good cow. She's 83 and a half inches tip to tip. Um she's just a nice cow. Really nice cow. Her she uh she's her she's got a heifer selling in the in this in the in our cell too.
JaymieWell, while we're talking about WS uh Jamaicaism, let's go down to lot 54. Eves Victory LV from Sunshine Acres.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, here's a Nunner, here's a Nunner bighorn cow. She's got a lot of total horn on her. She's just a 19 model. Uh she's she's bred, she's bred, good big-bodied brentle cow. She's got over 108 inches of total horn. Um she's brother, the drag iron. So, I mean, the breeding program's there, and you got the you got the pedigree to back it. So, and she's just a 19 mile. Yeah, she's got a horn that's down, but her calves won't have that. So that people, that's what I, you know, I tell people the the just because their horns are down doesn't mean that the calves are gonna have it. And you're looking at the people's wanting horns, this cow's gonna put the horns on them. So great animal.
JaymieWe'll go to one of your sponsors here, Landy's uh farms with Aaron and Micah, lot 60, C V Macy May.
SPEAKER_03We've seen this cow in person, and she is she is tremendous. She's she's 80 plus inches tip to tip. Uh she's she's she's bred to the cowboy uh Casanova's Pride, which they bought here a while back. It's over 90 inches. She's just a young cow. You got the Rio Grande on the top side, Sittinbull on the bottom side. You know, she's just um just a great cow. I mean, she's in person, she looks even better in the picture. She's she's just a tremendous cow.
JaymieWell, and she takes almost a picture perfect picture as well. Like she's standing correct, like everything great.
SPEAKER_03You got Cheryl, you got Cheryl helping on that too.
JaymieSo well, I thought maybe we could give Aaron maybe some some kudos for him out taking pictures or something.
SPEAKER_03No, no, not getting Aaron kudos on anything coming to picture.
JaymieOkay, next up is lot 64, WSR Ready or Nut from um DG D G Longhorn Ranch.
SPEAKER_03Another, another, another couple that's been with us for a while. Um, there you go, that cowboy tough checks. Um, she's gonna be coming to us bred. She's just she's a 22 model, nice young cow. Um I just can't say enough with what Dale and Gene has put together over the years with what they've done. They've they've bred some amazing cows. And here's here's another nice one. You know, you talk about the replacement heifers. Here's a cow here that's a proven producer that would make a good young cow to put in your herd, too. And she will be coming to our sale guaranteed bread.
JaymieSo the next one is from Highview Hill, Longhorns, Jeremy and Audrey Crook, lot 69, LF Mid Fortune Teller.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh. She's a she's a real nice cow. She's got um concealed weapon, WS Midnight, um, Jesse James, the pedigree goes on and on and on. Deja vu, you know, the the WS Midnight, Lisa Lubrin used that bull for years. Now Donnie Bulkart's got that bull and is still using him, you know, and she's she's exposed to the Love Warrior. She's just a real nice big-bodied black and white cow. The horns are the horns are there. She doesn't have a uh a tremendous set of horns, but she's gonna get into her horn. She's just a 19 model. Uh, she's she's a great looking animal. I mean, she's got 86 and 3/8 inch total horn. So she has the total horn there. She's she's she's gonna be gonna be bred and gonna have you a calf. So, you know, she's a nice cow.
JaymieLet's 74 Fashionable Queen RF from RH Longhorns is the next one we'll talk about.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we got to meet this one up close and personal here a while back. She's a nice heifer. Uh, she's a saddle horn heifer, um, which, you know, and then she you got the the Orno Dale uh breeding on the bottom side. She's just a young thing. She's a real nice, real nice horned young heifer. Um she she's got some size, she's she's sizable, she's not as big, but she's still young. Uh she's exposed. She is uh, well, she is not bread. She is open.
SPEAKER_01That one is bread.
SPEAKER_03She is?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, that one is yeah, that one is bread. Sorry.
JaymieGood thing we have Alison here with us.
SPEAKER_03But anyway, she she's a nice little heifer. She is she is a nice, she's got a pedigree to back it. You know, Orn Odell was in the business for years and years and years, and and you got Saddlehorn on the top. So she's does she's a nice young heifer.
JaymieWe'll go down to lot 79, 7D Oreos Girl from Tall Oaks Longhorns.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, this cow here strikes every it'll strike everybody's eye. We we um we we was contending bitter on this cow out at uh Randy and Kim's sale. Their daughter, their daughter actually outbid us on her, but she she's she's just uh she's just a great cow. I mean, there's not much you can say about her except she's she's bred to spoke zest. Uh spoke zest is a is a a phenomenal bull, black and white, 80 plus inch horns. Um, you know, we're gonna do our we're gonna do our darnest to to to bring this cow home too, but she's she's just a tremendous cow. Great. She's produced two black and white heifers that are in their mid-50s, a little low 60s already, you know, so she's just a great animal.
JaymieAnother one of your sponsors uh here we'll talk about is Lisa Loubring Slat 84 LF Scoot bootin' scootin' boots.
