SPEAKER_00I'm Jamie. And I'm Molly. We're the owners of Hired Hand Software and Hired Hand Live, and we're excited to bring you a closer look at this upcoming sale. In today's episode, we'll be talking with the sale host about consignments, sale details, and what to watch for in the ring. You can view consignments at hiredhandlive.com and in most cases, visit the consigners' hired hand powered websites to learn more. Now let's jump into this weekend's sale preview.
JaymieI'm here with Nick Nicodem to talk about his upcoming online sale. We'll be talking about the sale details and the consignments. As we talk about the consignments, you can follow along on hiredhandlive.com. And if you want to take a deeper look at Nick and Kim's uh sale animals, check out their website. Nick, welcome. How's your day going? Hey, thanks.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
JaymieSo you're having an online sale. Um, and do you want to tell everybody kind of what you and Kim are doing down there in Oklahoma?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sure. Um, yeah, real quick, I think um, I think I know most people in the in the breed nowadays are or not, but uh uh Kim and I live in central Oklahoma in Newcastle. Uh we've got pastures around centered around there. Um in years past, we've had a 4th of July sale. We've kind of done a um everything um on sale, cut a couple hundred bucks here, a couple hundred bucks there. Um but we thought with you know 250th anniversary, you know, we've talked about doing a hired hand thing. Um, and this would be the year to do it. So here we are, and um, you know, it's kind of a production sale. Um you know, Kim and I are running about somewhere around 150 animals, and um, you know, therefore making, you know, call it 50 babies a year. Um, you know, great opportunity to to make them available through a production sale, I think.
SPEAKER_02And and that's kind of what we're up to here, is the the gist of it.
JaymieWell, the online sale that you're gonna be having with us this year, um, what are the what are the details? When does it start? When does it end?
SPEAKER_03Um, so that's a great question. Uh we're gonna open it uh the first of July, and it will end on the 6th of July. I think that's the Monday, um, Monday evening. Um, you know, I uh we've all seen these things drag on or whatever. I I I just wanted to uh keep it fresh in people's mind. You know, if you're interested in the animals, bid um bid early, bid often, um, you know, kind of deal. But um, you know, I think uh there's a couple of different approaches to to a sale like this uh with with hired hand and and I I didn't want to open it at the beginning of the month and close it at the end of the month or something, something like that. I think there's a format for that. Um but for what we're trying to do, we're having a 4th of July production sale, and and I thought, you know, first through the sixth would be the be the ticket.
JaymieAnd we have it set up so that it's time bidding, um, so that each animal will close, you know, start at one, two, three, and then go from there. Uh and then if there are uh contending bidders towards the end of that lot, it'll give the contending bidder an additional minute and a half to bid, and that will go back and forth until somebody eventually stops bidding. Uh so the animals will close out one at a time. But do you have, for those people who are buying online, do you have haulers? Are you hauling? What is your plan there?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, um, great question. Uh the the um, you know, locally or whatever, Kim and I are happy to mostly Kim, I'm mostly me, I mean, uh happy to drive around and deliver as needed at a reasonable rate. Um plus, you know, we've been in the breed long enough uh that we've we know all the usual suspects when it comes to hauling. So if we're trying to get something to Idaho or or Pennsylvania or whatever, um we will assist um, you know, in coordinating with transportation. You know, of course, it's you know, you buy the animal, it's your animal, it's you know, kind of your responsibility to get it picked picked up. But we're happy to work with people. Um, you know, as an example, Kim and I are going up to Wisconsin at the end of the month, you know, probably a little bit of room on the trailer, you know. Um don't have any other major plans scheduled ourselves, but uh you know, we we'll we'll we will get you your cattle, and uh, you know, we will get you your cattle uh at a as reasonable a cost as as possible. Um happy to coordinate with haulers. And like I said, we know all the usual suspects uh and and uh happy to do that with people. Um if somebody's buying local, you know, happy to coordinate as best we can get it done, uh a reasonable time frame, you know. We're trying to get all of all of the cattle that are purchased uh off the place, you know, for better way to put for lack of a better way to put it by the end of the month.
SPEAKER_02You know, paid within five days, cattle are gone by the end of the month, kind of deal. So hopefully that answered your question.
JaymieDead, yes. Um, do you have any uh overall details about the animals? I know we're gonna talk about each one of them here in just a minute, but I didn't know if you had like a blanket statement about all of them.
SPEAKER_03Um no, I think um, well, I guess I do have a blanket statement. Everyone has been worked and um, you know, gotten their vaccines, annual vaccines, uh, preg checks, all of that stuff. Um couple of them will I actually have an appointment uh either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. We're recording on Monday. Um so um I'm missing a couple of pieces of information for the for a couple five animals, uh, but we'll get that updated on the website and uh for hired hand um you know measurements and that kind of thing. But but everyone's gonna be worked, um, everyone's gonna be preg checked. You know, I guess the overarching thing with with uh the sale is you you know, if you look at the animals, you know, we've got uh hustler daughters, we've got General Lee daughters, we've got you know, runaway gray daughters, we've got Bob Lee daughters. Um, you know, and you know, this is truly a production sale. Um I think just about everything, with the exception of one bull um that that we made available is uh you know, it's got my brand on it. So it's it's truly a production sale. And um, you know, we're proud of these animals. And you know, bid with confidence, you're you're getting good product, you know.
JaymieWell, you're ready to start talking about the animals? Sure, if you want. All right. Let's just start off with lot one. We'll start with great cowgirl Gatsby, CPO.
SPEAKER_03Sure. Um, so she's a hustler daughter, and uh, for those who may not remember Hustler, uh Hustler was a six-time horn showcase, uh LWC champion, you know, those nice big bronze trophies. Um, you know, way over 100 inches of total horn back when that was cool. And um her dam, uh Rexy B, R R R, Miss Rexy B, and there's a number in there, I forget. Uh anyway, she's now 97 and a half inches, lives down on the craft ranch. So this is a big, big, uh, big time animal uh made available. She herself, I think, was 77 when we measured her, and six months bred to runaway gray. Um, so I mean, this is a real opportunity for somebody. And um, you know, if you like those genetics, um, if you, you know, if if you're chasing, you know, bighorn cows, you know, she's probably gonna roll out and and you know be mid 80s herself, but uh she's produced real well for us and and uh and um I'm sure that uh whoever gets her is gonna be thrilled with her.
JaymieAll right, the next one we'll talk about is Grand Jamoka Cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um yeah, what a sweetheart. Uh she goes back to uh sired by um General Lee, and General Lee was uh catch it checks times uh Texana 2 Spot, which is a Texana Van Horn daughter. So serious genetics there. Um we bought uh that bull and used him for about three years, and then uh, you know, somebody made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and I hated to see him go, but uh uh the check cleared, you know what I mean? Um so um so we've only we've only been able to hang on to about four or five of his daughters, and I was a little bit surprised when Kim let me put one of his uh generally daughters in the sale. And and she's bred for a fall calf, too, uh runaway gray, and I think she measured in the mid-70s, 75 something, um tip to tip, you know, at this age. And and her maternal line goes back to some really powerhouse cows as well. On her maternal side, um she goes back to uh her grand grand is a full sib to um Jamaican, which makes her great grandma, of course, Jamoka. Um, you know, if you're a uh pedigree nerd like I am, um, you know, this is pretty pretty solid, serious stuff. And um, you know, just take a look at that pedigree. If if that's not something you can work with, then uh maybe you're you know you ought to be racing rabbits or something. But uh she's a good opportunity for a lot of people and and uh bred to runaway gray for yet another uh knockout calf this fall.
JaymieSo tell us what you know about Money Penny Cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Okay, Money Penny is another this is one that I'm a little bit shocked that uh uh Kim actually let me put her in the uh in the sale. Another great um runaway gray daughter. Um you know, I'm gonna brag on runaway gray for just a little bit. DCC Runaway Gray. Um, you know, he's a two-time uh get of sire champion at the Horn Showcase Championship. Now, for those who may not understand what that means, you know, Runaway Gray is only you know mid-80s, 83, 80 something, uh tip to tip, uh, and well over 100 inches of total horn. But when you when we're doing the get of sire thing, it's what they're what they're producing. And runaway gray's offspring measured well enough for him to walk away as a uh uh get of sire two years. Um that's pretty impressive. Um and for Money Penny, um, I'm looking here in my notes, and she goes back to uh GLR Archer's Abigail. Now that brings in some very interesting animals. You've got um uh Dutch Hop, which you know goes back to some, you know, pretty pretty solid HCR, Owen McGill type genetics. Um, you know, and Kim and I focus on cow power more so than bulls. I mean, you you'll hear me mention bull names, but really in uh um Money Penny's Predigree, you've got, like I said, Dutch Hop, WF Dumpling, Horseshoe J feet, Texana Van Horn. You know, the list goes on and on and on. You know, these are animals that hopefully people will appreciate and recognize.
JaymieThe next one we'll talk about is Nashville Cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Yeah, Nashville, um, totally shocked. Um you know, when you're trying to put a sale together like this and come up with 15 or so animals, you're like, oh my god, I yeah, I can't believe we're we're putting her in the sale. But uh, you know, the only reason Nashville's in the sale is because of uh um her mom, Memphis, just keeps spitting out heifers. And and uh this is a good problem to have, I assure you. Um so that's the only reason that she's been made available. And um, you know, again, take a look at that pedigree. Um she goes back to one of our best cows, a cow named Cadillac Sue, which is uh M Arrow uh Susie Checks, which is you know a clone of uh goes back to a clone of uh uh Rutledge's Miss Sue on that maternal line. You know, this is serious, serious, serious genetics, and um, you know, um love that cow to death. And uh yeah, so she's four months bred too to uh our bull rum runner and uh just a a dynamite opportunity for somebody, you know, real gruya possibilities there.
JaymieAll right, lot five is smoky cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um you know, so Kim and I make a lot of gruyas, and this is the only grueya we put in the sale. Um you know, and people always ask me, what's the secret to making a gruya cow? Well, it's pretty easy. Easiest way to make a gruya heifer is to start with a gruya cow. Uh second easiest way is to start with a grueya bull. Um, you know, those genetic, the color genetics are just weird in longhorns, and uh and I wish I could uh give somebody the secret, but I just don't know it. Um you know, gruya happens when it happens, and and uh anyway, this this young lady is just a dynamite um heifer, young heifer. Um and her maternal line is pretty solid too. Uh Monica's ringer. So um, you know, she goes back to Ringadinger and the Monica lines uh on the maternal side, just dynamite. And probably the most I won't say most cool, but one of the other cool things about this lot is um she was uh um palpated one month bread to our our new herdshire um uh gridiron. And gridiron is out of uh comes from Mike Davis's program. And and um and and uh gridiron is a maternal half sibling to Danica, uh three S3 Danica. And uh we were able to pry uh that young bull out of out of Mike's hands, and we appreciate Mike for that opportunity. Um so she's bred to um uh gridiron and um just a dynamite opportunity, a lot of flat lateral horn. Um this is probably one of the star lots of the sale, in my opinion. And and uh whoever ends up with there's gonna be thrilled.
JaymieNext up is uh golden cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Golden is uh um love the cow to death. Um you know, runaway gray times real lazawi. Uh I think we just lost real Lazaui, uh old age. Um she was a uh uh Rio Grande and uh uh Tabasco Lazaui and and um you know ended trail branded, you know, just a great cow. And and we lost her mom, and I'm a little bit surprised she this one this half her made it in the sale, but she did. You know, and I always joke if if if you can't work with uh with these genetics, then you know, you might want to consider rabbits. Uh um you know, the this is pretty serious stuff here. And and and it's a little bit oh, let's call it foundation genetics. I was gonna say old, but uh old is old is cool again. Um just ask me, I'll tell you. Um but but uh foundation type genetics there with uh Tabasco's Lazaui and uh you know Rio Grande, um WF Dumpling, you know, just dynamite stuff. And I don't think she's exposed. Let me see if my notes here. Yeah, I don't think we exposed her. Kim and I uh hang on to our heifers until they're two before we expose them. Um, you know, 12 times out of 10. And I don't think she's exposed.
JaymieWell, this next one looks almost identical to lot four. Um we'll talk about nightshade cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so again, runaway gray daughter uh and moonshadow. Yeah, you know, and and you know, black and white lineback. We get you know what it's one of the things um people ask me about runaway gray, you know, uh about the color, and I'm like, well, I hope you like lineback because that's the pattern he throws. You know, uh runaway gray throws a lot of linebacks. So in this case, there I think there's two black and white linebacks in the in the sale. And uh, you know, they're they're real nice. But in the case of uh uh Nightshade, you know, talk about some serious cow power. You got Markster, Tabasco's Aoi Texana, Van Horn, WF Dumpling, and Horseshoe J feet. Um you know, I know some people want to talk about bulls. I always want to talk about cows. You know, to me, uh this breed is built on cow power. Um and uh that young lady has cow power.
SPEAKER_02And uh, you know, hopefully somebody recognizes that out there and and and uh and takes her home.
JaymieNext up is Mango Tree Cowgirl.
SPEAKER_02So with Mango Tree, I think this is the first of our Bob Lee daughters.
SPEAKER_03Bob Lee is is uh uh swagger times H.R. Slams Rose. Um and you know, in today's industry, you know, it's it's it's pretty solid genetics, and and you know, and I don't I I I always joke if you can't work with with uh HR Slams Rose and Swagger, you know, you know, you you know, maybe I ought to, maybe me personally ought to be raising rabbits if I can't do that. Um so we've got a handful of uh Bob Lee daughters in the sale, and uh Mango Tree is just the the first one. And as I think about her maternal line, yeah, this one goes back to uh a cow that uh Dick Lowe had. Uh triple R gosh, what was her name? Miss Miss Mount 2 or something like that. Um big twisty 80-inch cow back when 80 inches was cool. So she's gonna be a big girl and uh a good opportunity for somebody that that's looking for um you know slamrose um, you know, big big animal type genetics. So good opportunity for somebody.
JaymieLet's talk about another Bob Lee daughter and we'll move on to white satin cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um so her so again, like you said, Bob Lee, but um um she goes back to a uh Hustler daughter, and uh we talked about Hustler already, but he's uh you know six six of those uh nice, really nice trophies that are, you know, uh collecting dust in our place. Um so interesting that she goes back also to uh a cow that uh HR J.R. Willow. Uh J.R. Willow was an interesting animal, and uh J.R. Willow was one of, if not the last, uh um gunman daughters, and and Kim and I were fortunate enough to purchase her along the way. Uh goes back to to Ron and uh and Joe Jones back up in Colorado. Um, but um interesting set of genetics there. And uh she is gonna, you know, like I said, I think uh we call her white in in our our comments, but she's gonna roan out like her mom, uh looking at her ears, looking at her tail, whatever.
SPEAKER_02She's gonna look a lot like her mom when she grows up, and that's a good thing.
JaymieSo well, next up is uh Mountain Coa cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, this is another one I'm totally shocked that Kim uh I think she Kim actually may have volunteered to put this one in the sale, but uh uh she's a runaway great daughter uh and goes back to uh um Mountain Mango Betty. Uh and again, that's some of that uh JR type genetics, uh Jones Ranch genetics on the maternal side. Uh, you know, with grand dams with with uh dumpling and that uh triple R Miss Mountain Z cow. You know, that's that's pretty solid, and and hopefully people recognize that and can can find something in there to love and to work with.
JaymieSo the next one we'll talk about is lot 11, spicy tuna, cowgirl.
SPEAKER_03Okay, no, so another Bob Lee daughter, um, great opportunity. Uh her damn Tullaby is actually uh a full sib to lot one, um, which is part of the reason that lot one is in the sale. I've got doubles and whatever triples, you know how that goes. Um, you know, great opportunity here. And again, just make mention that, you know, when your granddams are HR Slams Rose and the 97-inch uh Miss Rexy B, pretty nice cow. Uh and uh Spicy Tuna's got an interesting horn shape, um, you know, kind of a flat lateral, almost tipped backwards kind of whatever. It's gonna be fun to watch her grow, and and whoever ends up with her is gonna um gonna sure have a nice cow.
SPEAKER_02Um and uh um again, I hate to keep saying it, but a little bit shocked that she's in the sale.
JaymieUh all right, next up, cowgirl in sneakers.
SPEAKER_03Okay, cowgirl in sneakers. Uh actually she she won us some money, uh, brought us home a check, bought her own groceries or whatever, however you want to put it, at the uh Winchester Futurity. And And a little bit shocked that um you know we're we're putting her in the sale. But again, you know, we're talking, you know, program duplicates kind of thing here. And and um so she goes back to a cow named shoelace and and and shoelace you know, it goes back to Monica lines and also uh Ring of Dinger lines, or sorry, Rutledge's dinger lines. So this young lady's actually got dinger genetics top and bottom with swagger and uh and shoelace. But this is just a great little cow. And um, you know, she's probably one of the stars of the sale. And I think uh when you study that pedigree and you look at that animal, you're gonna go, yep, that's one I want. And um, you know, if if I didn't have the ability to reproduce her or you know have have uh animals just like her, she wouldn't be in the sale. But uh we also needed to put in uh, of course, great animals to to get people's attention. And um, she's one of those that I I think is gonna be the star of the one of the stars of the show. You know, and and and you had asked me earlier about um um, you know, why are we doing this, or or or tell me about the sale. You know, part of it is um, you know, Kim and I don't know everybody, and everybody doesn't know us. Um and uh we want to get our our name out there a little bit uh for people that may have started in the last couple, four, couple, three, four, five years, whatever, and may not be aware of the animals that we make down here in Oklahoma. Um and this is just an example of of one of those that uh we're sure awful proud of and and I think will do real well in somebody's program. And um I don't know if you know this, but uh we put in an we we we put in another one last minute, uh a young lady named Enzo Cowgirl. Um and again, she's a Bob Lee daughter. And and um, you know, she's she was born June 1st, so she's right out of year. A couple of these are just over a year plus, you know, years uh month, call it 12, 13, 14 months old. Um and you know, are are we idiots for selling heifers? Yes. Are you idiots for buying heifers? Yes. No, I'm just kidding. Um, but but you know, you know, there's there's two different sides to that coin. And and um and Enzo is another one of those uh examples with uh you know Bob Lead genetics on top, again, swagger, HR slams rose, and on the maternal side, she goes back to um um one of our first cows, uh bringing in Roundup genetics um on the bottom. And uh just a just a great opportunity for somebody in a in a in a young cow that's gonna be a big cow.
JaymieAnd do you have um semen in the sale, correct? How many lots of coverage? We do.
SPEAKER_03Um so there's varying lots on the semen. Um we've got uh runaway gray semen, both heifer-sext and conventional. Um I think we broke it into three straw lots and five straw lots. Um also we had uh uh Hustler and First Command um, you know, two bulls from the past, uh, our breeding program. Um, you know, both of which, like I said, Hustler won six trophies. I think uh First Command only brought home one darn it, but he was uh gorgeous bull. Uh black and white uh top caliber uh son, one one of the few black and white top caliber sons, and we used him for years. Um so their semen um is gonna be made available in the sale as well. But all of the semen that we make available, and I think we may have an uh an extra lot to add in to a couple, are are gonna be at pretty deep discounts. Yeah, you know, I think uh at some point we're gonna stop selling uh runaway gray heifer sex semen. I think you know, all total we're probably down to you know low 20s number of straws. Um and I'm not saying buy it now or you know, you might be SOL, but um, you know, we're at some point we're we're gonna be taking it off the market because it's gone. Um, you know, anyway, enough rambling about that.
unknownGo ahead.
JaymieI've always and I've always wondered this, but I've never asked. A lot of your animals have cowgirl in them. Is that a nod to Kim? Or where does cowgirl come from?
SPEAKER_03Um, so the God's honest truth, uh I came back from Afghanistan and and I had a bunch of baby cows in the in the pasture that were named Fufu Butt and or something silly like that, or or Daisy, whatever. Um, and I said no, there's gonna be a a naming scheme, and it's gonna be blank or blank blank cowgirl CPL, and that's it. Um so occasionally I get vetoed, um, and it'll be cowgirl blank CPL. Um the cowgirl will go in front, but usually it's blank or blank blank cowgirl CPL. Um I don't know. A lot of people put their their brand name or brand, the CPL part in our case, in front of the of the um name of the animal. Uh we chose to put it in back. And I think the easiest reason we did it that way is because if you do it your your brand in front, then it's really hard to put everything in alphabetical order. Um so we decided to put our brand at the end of it. And uh, but yeah, you're right. It's got our brand on it, though, and it's a girl, there's pretty pretty darn solid chance, 99.9% that the world world word cowgirl will end up in her pedigree. And is it a nod to Kim? Sure, a little bit. Uh our daughter Cheyenne, who's got, you know, more cow sense in her pinky than you know most cowboys I know. Um, yeah, you know, there's been a few times and and a couple lately where where Kim is has shined in her ability to get these cows to do things that I can't get them to do. Um, so yeah.
JaymieCowboy is a good thing. Is there anything that we have not talked about that you want to mention about the sale?
SPEAKER_03Um, you know, we do have one one uh a couple of bulls in the sale too. I I I uh um you know, I would just ask people to take a look at them, you know, and if they don't work for you, then fine. Thanks. Thanks for looking at them. But uh take a look at them, and and it may be something you could use in your program. Um and if not, then you know, thanks. Like I said, move on. Um selling bulls is tough as we as we all know. Uh and uh, you know, I'm just making them available to people. And if if that's not something you want to do, then rock on, you know. Um you know, I guess the other thing I would just say is is um, you know, I've I've had people ask me, Oh, you guys are getting out. No, we're not getting out. Um, you know, this is what, 15 animals? Um, you know, we we typically sell 40 plus animals a year, because that's we make about 50 animals a year. And yeah, we cull pretty hard and and we go to a bunch of the sales, but well, most of our stuff is done private treaty. Um, and and this is just an extension of of that bringing it all together. So no, we're not going anywhere. Um, can't imagine not having longhorns.
JaymieUm, thank you for joining us. Um, for everyone listening, make sure you check out the Commander Place 4th of July online production sale. Follow us for more updates. Until next time.
